Activities at Kickapoo State Park

Kickapoo State Recreation Area boasts 3,971 acres of land consisting of forest (70%); grassland (14%); shrubs (10%) and cropland (6%). There are a wide variety of recreational activities available for visitors to the park to enjoy, which include: more than 180 campsites, 20 ponds, 7 hiking/running trails, mountain bike trails, fishing, hunting, canoeing/kayaking, horseback riding, and much more.

Our aim is to increase awareness about what visitors can do while in Kickapoo State Park. We hope that with the information provided here, we will not only make your visits more enjoyable, but more frequent as well.

Day Use Areas

There are 11 day use areas in the park. They are perfect places for a family reunion, a birthday party, or a company bbq. Eight areas have shelter and six of them are reservable for the day. The others are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Camping

There are 183 camping sites in Kickapoo; 101 electric sites (48 reservable) and 82 non-electric sites (34 reservable), as well as a group camp site. Enjoy free weekend movies at the outdoor amphitheatre (weather permitting). More information as well as maps are on the Camping page.

Fishing

All 20 ponds as well as the Middle Fork Vermilion River are open to fishing. Small mouth bass, crappie, and blue gill are common to most ponds and the river. Clear Pond is stocked with rainbow trout twice a year and you can find catfish and large mouth bass in the river.

Hunting/Trapping

There are 2,356 huntable acres in Kickapoo where you can hunt and trap various animals throughout the year. Some animals require special permits in Kickapoo. You can find specific hunting season dates on our Events Calendar as well.

Hiking/Running

There are 7 official trails in Kickapoo. This includes the “Fun Run” course which is used by local high schools for competitive meets. Kennekuk Road Runners also hosts multiple racing events throughout the year in the park.

Canoeing/Kayaking/Tubing

Bring your canoe, kayak, and tubes and enjoy some time out on the water. Don’t have any of those? No worries, Kickapoo Landing is located in Kickapoo State Park and offers a wide variety of ways to enjoy a day out on the water. Canoe, kayak, and tube rental packages are available.

Mountain Biking

The Kickapoo Mountain Bike Club has been clearing paths and burning rubber since 1993. They have cleared about 10 miles on multiple trails for your enjoyment.

Horseback Riding

Thunder Wolf Trail Rides offers horseback riding lessons, birthday parties with pony rides, and ½ hour or full hour trail rides.

Disc Golf

Do you like a little competition during your walks through the park? How about a friendly game of disc golf. The course is located in the middle of Kickapoo in the same area as the Ironwood and Meadow day use areas and the Fun Run cross country course.

Other Activities

What else is there to do at Kickapoo? How about a game of sand volleyball or horseshoes? Bring your binoculars and do some bird watching. Be on the lookout for special events and new activities.
